Paperwork

Last week I finally got the official letter from the university, which allows me to work as a research fellow and tutor (for which I even get paid) and to get access to the library etc. Before that I only had a temporary access. The other week I received my trainee visa, which I had to apply for, since my tourist visa wasn’t sufficient.

It only took 3 months to get all this paperwork done…

Btw, I think I haven’t told everybody yet: I finally extended my stay and will be back to Vienna end of June!

I once worked as an SHK (“studentische Hilfskraft”) during my thesis project in Germany.

when I wanted to sign the contract with the university, they said I would need a German (!) bank account first. when I went to the bank, they told me I would need a contract with my employer first, or at least a place to live. when I went to the dorm’s office, they said I would need a bank account, or a note from my employer first …

after 6 weeks, ie he half of my stay, I finally was able to ( ) sign the dorm contract ( ) have my bank account opened and ( ) sign my university contract

by then I had left a considerable paper trail, so the German tax sent me forms to my dorm address (they wanted tax from me, of course), and also the City Hall sent me a lot of paper (they made me on officially registered resident and pay a fee to be an official city inhabitant, since I was living and employed in their city) …

That sounds like a really bad experience. So, are you still an official inhabitant of that city? ;)

Here in Australia at least everybody is really friendly and trying to help you. It’s just all about talking to the right people, ie finding out who the right people to talk to are, first.

no, no citizenship anymore … but anyway, it’s all history now (as a member of a European Union country visiting another EU coutry I simply would have expected less paperwork, but it turned out that Saxony even beats good old Austrian bureaucrazy [typo intented] in this respect)
